About Concord University
Concord University is a comprehensive, public, liberal arts institution located in Athens, which is a town in Mercer County, in the US state of West Virginia, with a small population of little over 1000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census. Athens is part of the Bluefield, WV-VA micropolitan area, which has approximately 108 000 people, living within its limits.
Concord University was established in 1872, when the West Virginia Legislature passed `an Act to locate a Branch State Normal School, in Concord Church, in the County of Mercer`. It was founded by veterans of both the Union and the Confederacy, and it is named for the ideal of `harmony and sweet fellowship`, its current name being adopted in 2004.
Concord currently offers its students educational programs in areas such as education, biology, pre-law, pre-medicine, mathematics, psychology, graphic designs and other.
Athletics
Concord's sports teams are known as the Mountain Lions and they compete in NCAA Division II, in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gray and their mascot is, obviously, the Mountain Lion.
